Built by Those Who Lived the Gap

Our Journey

From Lived Experience to Real Impact

The Spark

A challenge we lived

Our founders (Rexford, Joseph, and Adeola) experienced first-hand the barriers that students face in UK higher education. The awarding gap, coupled with a stark lack of representation at the professorial level, revealed a systemic problem. Tools alone couldn't solve it, but they could begin to address it.

The Insight

Pre-submission is where students need help most

Most support arrives after the grade. We realised the real gap is before submission, in the silence between a lecture and a deadline. Feedback Coach was designed to intervene at this critical moment, giving students bespoke, pre-submission feedback that builds their research and analytical skills.

The Growth

Three universities and counting

Feedback Coach has now been implemented across three universities to support students. We continue to organise on-campus events for Black students to drive engagement with the tool at the universities we are affiliated with.

Why This Matters

The Numbers Behind the Mission

According to the Higher Education Statistics Agency, Black academics remain drastically underrepresented at the highest levels. That reality, together with the awarding gap, drives everything we build.

What Guides Us

Mission & Vision

Our Mission

To close the achievement gap for Black and minority ethnic students and researchers by providing supportive, targeted tools that build assessment readiness and strengthen individual academic and career competencies.

Our Vision

A future where Black and minority ethnic students and researchers thrive, equipped with the skills, resources, and opportunities to excel in their academic pursuits and reach their full career potential.

From the Founders

We Built Feedback Coach Because Better Learning Support Should Arrive Before the Grade

This is not a tool that began as a trend-led product idea. It began as research, teaching practice, and a persistent question: how do we help students recognise what is missing in their work while there is still time to improve it?

Our founding conviction

Feedback Coach started in the less glamorous part of innovation: manual research, repeated testing, and close attention to how students actually prepare assessment workBuilt by hand firstFeedback Coach began as a manual research tool, tested carefully on paper before it became a digital platform. That early discipline mattered because it forced us to understand the student journey, not just automate it.. Before there was a platform, there was a structured process for examining student responses, identifying patterns, and asking whether those patterns could tell us something useful before a student reached the point of failure.

On paper, the tool showed real promise. It helped predict student outcomes and reveal learning gapsValidated through learning evidenceIn its earliest research stages, the tool performed strongly at predicting student outcomes and surfacing learning gaps that were easy to miss until a final grade arrived. early enough for meaningful intervention. That mattered to us because too much academic support still arrives after the damage is done: the feedback is useful, but the grade has already been awarded.

The aha moment came when we realised the research did not have to stay as a static diagnostic exercise. It could become an interactive system for students and tutorsDesigned for both sides of learningThe breakthrough was realising this could become an interactive system: one that helps students act before submission and helps tutors understand where support is needed most.: a way for students to test their understanding, strengthen their work, and build confidence before submission, while giving tutors clearer visibility of the gaps that need targeted support.

Building that system required tenacity. We have had to bridge academic research, classroom reality, software engineering, institutional trust, and the lived experience of students who are too often underserved by generic education technology. Feedback Coach exists because we kept returning to the same principle: learning tools should be rigorous, accessible, and designed around the moment when support can still change the outcome.
